The Imran Jaffer Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of two more IJF Summer Internship programs, effective 2018, as follows:
We take this opportunity to thank all our partners, sponsors, friends and well wishers to make the vision of IJF a reality in our pursuit of improving the quality of life of the youth through educational scholarships and real life learning experiences . This past Sunday (Dec. 17) over 50 friends, family and Foundation supporters gathered for a pot luck social. Thanks to the Jaffer family for hosting this wonderful annual event. This past summer working with JLL and IJF exceeded my expectations in almost every imaginable way. First and foremost, I’d like to express my gratitude to the Jaffer family for giving me an opportunity to jumpstart my career and act as an ambassador for a cause that commemorates their beloved son, Imran. Currently, I am entering my culminating year in the Urban Development Program at Western University. Much like my predecessor, Dianne Ramos, I was looking for direction in a career upon graduation. The commercial real estate industry has always intrigued me, but it was not an easy industry for younger students to penetrate. IJF provided me with an opportunity to explore my options and as a result, I am now certain that I intend to pursue a career in this field. Often times, one’s career is shaped by those who they associate themselves with during their formative years. In my case, I was very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work at JLL as a Research Analyst for office leasing. I knew from the beginning that JLL was a global powerhouse in the commercial real estate scene, but I had no idea how much I would’ve enjoyed my time there and how well they have developed their corporate culture. As part of the company’s first officially organized summer program, I can safely say that future interns will flourish in the work environment. Being part of a relatively small research team was an enormous blessing, as I never felt detached from the rest of my colleagues. Throughout my time there, my managers entrusted me to fulfill tasks that they would have done themselves, including client-facing presentations. I truly believe that every job I completed throughout my internship served a purpose in daily operations. As a result, I was able to expedite my personal career development. It goes without saying that JLL breeds an extremely positive environment. Rather than following a typical corporate agenda, they encourage collaboration between service lines and employees around the globe, thus growing a tight-knit community. Once again, I am extremely grateful to have been part of that. The relationships I was able to cultivate with JLL employees and fellow interns will certainly remain important to me moving forward. As an ambassador for IJF, my time at JLL was just part of the reason why my summer was so fulfilling. I was fortunate enough to have been invited to represent IJF on two major occasions – first, at the World Partnership Walk in May and then at the IJF Memorial Soccer Tournament. I felt a great sense of pride being able to spread awareness about IJF’s mandate and bringing close friends to these events, as I strongly believe The Foundation is making waves in empowering local youth and communities abroad. Taking part in IJF’s philanthropic initiatives and seeing the impact from the soccer tournament donations was genuinely rewarding in itself. As the second benefactor of the JLL/IJF internship, it is safe to say that the opportunities I was given changed my life. Looking back one year, I now have a much better sense as to what I plan to do upon graduation. Along the way, I have met some amazing people and I plan on furthering this journey in the future. Once again, I would like to extend my gratitude to the Jaffer family for allowing me to represent The Foundation and to eternalize the values of Imran Jaffer. It is an honor to be an ambassador to a cause with such a noble purpose, and I plan on continuing his legacy in years to come as IJF continues to expand their footprint locally and globally. As Ram Shriram once said, “Life is fleeting, and permanence in this world is something we all strive for. The best way to achieve permanence is through philanthropy.” Warren Fung (JLL/IJF Intern ’17) Some pictures from the 2017 Toronto World Partnership Walk on June 4, where several IJF supporters participated...

As most of you know, Imran was a tremendous soccer enthusiast, be it on the field or off. From a young age Imran excelled on the pitch, leading numerous teams to success and making hundreds of friends along the way.

This past Sunday (Dec. 18) a group of Imran's family and friends got together for the 3rd annual holiday potluck. It was a great time, with excellent food and lots of socializing and catching-up. The Imran Jaffer Foundation is pleased to announce that the inaugural Imran Jaffer Memorial Scholarship Award in Urban Development was awarded to Liana Langley, a student in the Western University Urban Development Program. This award was established through the Imran Jaffer Foundation, and the family and friends of Imran Jaffer in celebration of his life, and to recognize a student who shares Imran's qualities, values, and interests. The hope is that future students will receive the assistance they require to fulfil their dreams and aspirations. At an award ceremony on Nov. 25, Foundation and Department of Geography representatives had the privilege of presenting this award to Liana and celebrating her achievement. Liana’s record of community service and academic excellence make her a highly deserving recipient for this award. Following is Liana’s submission. During my years at Western so far, there are two main community leadership and volunteering activities that I have took part in. The first being my executive leadership role as event coordinator for Western’s Black Students’ Association. Throughout the year I planned many events such as club socials, open mics, a fashion show, and even an end of year Gala to celebrate black history and the talents of our members. Through this club I also volunteered at the Regional HIV/AIDS connection located in downtown London. Through their needle and syringe program my partners and I put together needle kits to help users practice safer drug use. My team members and I also coordinated a large talent night where we raised enough money to donate to the Congress of Black Women of Canada- London Chapter, for their scholarship programs where they fund black female students. Additionally, I was also an international peer guide within the Chinese Program at Huron University, where I was paired with an international student from China. We would meet up regularly, it was my duty and pleasure to help her feel comfortable and help her with any language barriers she had in her school work.
In my hometown of Toronto, I also did a lot of volunteering activities. I was a volunteer staff at St. Alban Boys and Girls Club- Black Creek and also at Falstaff Community Centre. Where I planned out activities for the children, helped them with homework, and supervised them. This was highly fulfilling for me because I got a chance to help young children in my neighbourhood and make a positive impact in their lives. I also volunteered at a local law office, where my duties included filing, greeting clients, and taking minutes. At my former high school, I was also the president of the Black Student’s Association where I planned and participated in the Black History month assembly. Additionally, I was also a student mentor where I mentored incoming students that wanted to pursue Advance Placement courses. Currently I am a fundraiser on the fundraising committee for the London Bridges Community Organization. So far I have been volunteering weekly at Rotholme Women's & Family Shelter in London, where we visit the children of the shelter and coordinate activities such as arts and crafts. How will this Scholarship Award support you in your studies ? The Imran Jaffer Award will help me greatly during my time in the Urban Development Program. I have been given the wonderful opportunity to go on exchange to Bond University in Australia, where I will be continuing my studies and taking amazing courses which I am sure Imran would have loved. The Imran Jaffer Memorial Award in Urban Development has helped lift a heavy burden off my shoulders, and will allow me to feel financially stable at Bond University and therefore allow me to solely focus on this amazing exchange opportunity that I am positive will increase my knowledge within the Urban Development field. How can you further our cause in the future and be an Ambassador for IJF? Most importantly I will further the cause of the Imran Jaffer Foundation and be an ambassador for IJF by continuing to possess and spread the qualities that Imran was known for. These qualities include being passionate about causes and things you love, striving for excellence within academia, and most importantly holding love in one’s heart always with the purpose to inspire others that surround you. I would also love to participate in the annual events that are held in memory of Imran such as the World Partnership Walk and the IJF Memorial Soccer Tournament. Lastly I can help further the IJF cause by donating my time to any extra help the IJF foundation needs and one day in the near future donating to the IJF to help other students that possess Imran’s qualities and vision. |
